By “deciding how to decide”, I mean using practical reasoning to regulate one’s principles of practical reasoning. David Gauthier has suggested that deciding how to decide is something that every rational agent does.[2] Whether or not we agree with Gauthier about agents in general, we might think that his suggestion applies well enough to many of us moral philosophers. We assess rival principles of practical reasoning, which tell us how to choose among actions; and assessing how to choose among actions certainly sounds like deciding how to decide.

Deciding as Intentional Action: Control over Decisions
Common-sense folk psychology and mainstream philosophy of action agree about decisions: these are under an agent's direct control, and are thus intentional actions for which agents can be held responsible. I begin this paper by presenting a problem for this view. In short, since the content of the motivational attitudes that drive deliberation and decision remains open-ended until the moment of...

Do you ever have to go back, re-think, and then decide differently, and if so, how d...

We view the problem of sensor-based decision-making in terms of two components: a sensor fusion component that isolates a set of models consistent with observed data, and an evaluation component that uses this information and task-related information to make model-based decisions. In previous work we have described a procedure for computing the solution set of parametric equations describing a ...
